Antimicrobial Stewardship

Ensuring early, effective therapy while reducing unnecessary antibiotic use.

The clinical impact of the PNA FISH test was the ability of the hospital AMT to get early results. This allowed them to evaluate the patients and to ensure accurate antimicrobial therapy and reduce unnecessary usage of vancomycin by preventing or limiting the treatment of CoNS contaminants in blood cultures

PNA FISH® and Antimicrobial Stewardship

Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASPs) play a key role in ensuring early, appropriate therapy for patients with critical infections while at the same time reducing unnecessary antibiotic use and lowering hospital costs. By providing faster pathogen identification, PNA FISH® enables microbiology labs to provide real-time diagnostic support to physicians and pharmacists who in turn can optimize antibiotic therapy and care earlier for patients with bloodstream infections.

Clinical studies have shown that incorporating PNA FISH into hospitals’ Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs led to 1) shorter in times to appropriate therapy, 2) lower mortality rates, 3) shorter lengths of stay (LOS), and 4) real reductions in hospital bed, pharmacy and laboratory costs.(1,2)
